Our Beginnings
In 1978, computer executive Gary Pittman noticed that something was missing from the computer
industry: up-to-date technological news. Armed with client and vendor experience, Pittman knew
what type of information computer consumers were looking for, and he set out to create a publications
company that would produce a high-quality computer resource guide for Burroughs computer users.
The result was what would become a wildly popular computer-centered magazine. (The publication was
originally entitled Burroughs World and was later changed to UNISYS World). At that time, IBM was the
big fish in the world of computers, and 90 percent of Burroughs World focused on IBM-related topics.
Soon, however, Pittman was getting calls from non-IBM consumers who wanted a more customized
publication for their particular type of system. Rather than produce just one additional publication to
satisfy the masses, Pittman created 15. Shipped to 150 countries around the world, the publications had
a loyal—and diverse—following in the computer industry.
Our Future
In the 1990s, Pittman says he "began to see the writing on the wall"; PCs were introduced, the market
began to favor Intel-based Microsoft operating systems, and only one computer magazine was necessary
to sustain his publication's original market. This turn in computer history didn't devastate PCI, however;
instead, it gave the company a new outlet for success.
In 1995, Pittman found another untapped niche in the shelter industry and started three new publications:
Austin Home & Living, Concrete Homes, and Concrete Monthly. The emphasis on shelter led to opportunities
with related businesses. Today, PCI brings both publishing and web expertise to industries such as the American
Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the Network of Hospitality (NEWH) that want to create a strong visual image through
web technology.
"They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and that's absolutely true to any company where image is
everything," Pittman says. "We've survived the past 30 years because we're innovative. There's never a shortage
of ideas here."
